Dr Marie Spreckley, a specialist in weight-management research at the University of Cambridge who was not involved in the study, says the research highlights how many patients may require ongoing treatment to maintain results.
“We still do not know how durable these effects will be over longer periods of time,” she explained.
“This study reinforces the growing recognition that obesity is a chronic, relapsing disease that often requires ongoing treatment and support.”
Researchers caution that more studies are needed before scientists can determine how long patients may need to remain on medications like orforglipron.
Some experts believe treatment could potentially become lifelong for certain individuals, much like medications used to manage high blood pressure or diabetes.
One major advantage of the new pill is convenience.
