Afterward, they were randomly assigned either a daily orforglipron pill or a placebo tablet for another year. Importantly, participants did not know whether they were receiving the real medication or the placebo.
The results surprised researchers.
Patients who took the orforglipron pill managed to maintain more than 70% of the weight they had previously lost, while those in the placebo group retained only around 38% to 50% of their earlier weight loss.
That difference could prove hugely important for long-term obesity treatment.
Experts say the findings reinforce a growing understanding that obesity behaves like a chronic medical condition — not simply a matter of willpower or dieting.
