Prosecutors claim Wang reposted the article through US News Center shortly after receiving it and communicated directly with Chinese officials about the publication.
Authorities say Wang never informed the US government about these activities despite legal requirements demanding disclosure when acting on behalf of foreign governments or political entities.
The case has intensified fears among US officials that foreign governments may increasingly attempt to influence not only national politics but also local governments and smaller communities across the country.
Wang’s rise in local politics had previously appeared relatively routine.
