“This plea agreement is the latest success in our determination to defend the homeland against China’s efforts to corrupt our institutions,” Essayli declared.
“Individuals in our country who covertly do the bidding of foreign governments undermine our democracy,” he added.
According to court documents, Wang allegedly worked closely with another individual identified as Yaoning “Mike” Sun, 65, in operating a media platform called US News Center.
The website presented itself as a news outlet serving Chinese Americans living in Arcadia and surrounding communities. However, prosecutors claim the platform was actually used to distribute messaging favorable to the Chinese government.
Investigators allege that Chinese officials regularly sent Wang prepared articles and propaganda through the encrypted messaging app WeChat.
