MY SON SPENT HIS LUNCH MONEY ON A LITTLE GIRL’S BIRTHDAY DRESS. THE NEXT MORNING, SOMEONE LEFT FIFTY LUNCHBOXES ON OUR LAWN — AND ONE OF THEM CONTAINED A LETTER THAT HAD BEEN WAITING NINE YEARS TO BE READ.

I knew something was wrong when my eight-year-old son came running into my bedroom before sunrise, barefoot and out of breath.

“Mom, don’t go outside yet.”

That was enough to get me out of bed.
