MY SON SPENT HIS LUNCH MONEY ON A LITTLE GIRL’S BIRTHDAY DRESS. THE NEXT MORNING, SOMEONE LEFT FIFTY LUNCHBOXES ON OUR LAWN — AND ONE OF THEM CONTAINED A LETTER THAT HAD BEEN WAITING NINE YEARS TO BE READ.

Noah wasn’t a child who scared easily. He was the kid who once found a snake in our garage and spent ten minutes trying to convince it to “please go live somewhere else.”

But that morning, he was standing in my doorway with his hands shaking.

“What happened?”

He swallowed.

“There’s something on the lawn.”

I pulled on my robe and followed him downstairs.

When I opened the front door, I forgot about being tired.
