I carried a baby for my twin brother and when he looked at her back he handed her to me and said, “I’m not taking her home.”

And in the March of 2024 they asked me.

They did it badly, over about forty minutes, with a lot of “you can absolutely say no.”

And I said yes in about four seconds and then pretended to think about it for a week so that they would believe I had.

Because Danny has been my best friend since before either of us could talk.

Because I have a son, Charlie, and I know what it is.

And because the happiest I have ever seen that man in his adult life is on my kitchen floor with a four-year-old on his back.

Transfer was in the September. It took first time, which nobody expects and which everybody in that clinic was quietly astonished by.
