PART 1 — THE EMPTY CHAIR
The first thing I saw was my daughter’s hand under a tangle of lines.
The second was the chair beside the bed, pushed in against the wall, with nothing on it.
I had come back from Thornhaven two days early. A deal had closed on the Wednesday instead of the Friday and I had not told anybody, because I had a picture in my head of making Saskia breakfast on a Thursday and giving Dax a hard time about the orchids.
