I came home two days early and found my twelve-year-old in intensive care with an empty chair beside her bed. Her father was on a boat. By eight that evening my phone showed ninety-nine missed calls from him — and none of that is the part that finished my marriage.

The house was empty at ten past two in the afternoon.

There were three missed calls on my phone from Calder Point Hospital, the earliest at one twenty-six.

By the time I got to that unit my legs had gone.

“Mrs. Kelling? Your daughter had a severe anaphylactic reaction. She’s stable. The first hour was not good.”

“Who brought her in?”

“Your housekeeper.”

I looked at him.
