Latvia, along with neighboring Lithuania and Estonia, has remained one of Ukraine’s strongest supporters since Russia launched its full-scale invasion. At the same time, the Baltic nations have become increasingly nervous about the possibility of Russian aggression spreading closer to their borders.
In recent years, Latvia has rapidly expanded its military spending and security measures. The country now dedicates around 5% of its GDP to defence and has even reintroduced compulsory military service to strengthen national preparedness.
Silina emphasized that such massive defense investments require “a much higher level of responsibility toward society” and must produce visible results for the Latvian people.
