Clear Area Around Heating Equipment
If your apartment has access to furnaces, boilers, or other heating equipment (for example in a shared utility room or closet), make sure there’s at least a 36-inch clear area around them. This helps ensure safe, efficient operation and is often required by code.
Cover Window Air Conditioning Units
Permanent window AC units can leak a lot of cold air in winter if left uncovered.
If you can’t remove them, use a dedicated cover or outdoor blanket to seal them off for the season. “Covers fit over the unit like a pouch and come complete with a securing strap for an extra seal,” Luke says.
Reverse Ceiling Fans
Most ceiling fans have a small blade reversal switch on the motor housing. In winter, flip this switch so the fan runs in reverse (typically clockwise at low speed).
This pushes warm air that’s risen to the ceiling back down into the living space, helping you feel warmer without cranking the thermostat higher.
