FAQ #1 – Can Defogging Too Fast Crack Your Windshield?
Short answer: not if you use your car’s systems correctly.
Your AC-based defogging is safe, because it blows cool, dehumidified air. Your defroster is also designed to warm the glass gradually as the engine warms up. That slow change in temperature is exactly what the glass is built to handle.
What can damage the windshield?
- Pouring hot water on a frozen windshield.
- Blasting it with a hair dryer or heat gun from inches away.
Those kinds of rapid, uneven temperature shocks can cause the glass to expand too quickly and crack. If you’re in a hurry, use a proper ice scraper or a commercial de-icer instead of a DIY heat attack.
