Winter Hack: The Right Way to Defog a Windshield (Without Ruining It)

How to Defog a Windshield the Right Way

The basic move is simple: let the car do the work.

Step-by-step defog routine:

  1. Turn on the defrost mode.
This usually switches on the AC automatically, even in winter. It directs airflow toward the windshield using the defroster vents that are already aimed exactly where you need them.
  2. Let the system dehumidify the cabin air.
The air flows through the cold evaporator fins, which strip moisture out of the air before it hits the glass.
  3. Use the fan on medium to high.
More airflow = faster clearing. Just avoid roasting hot air straight away; let the system do its job gradually.
  4. Want it to work faster? Flip your visors down.
This little trick helps redirect air that’s trying to go straight up, bouncing it back toward the windshield so more air moves across the glass instead of the roof.

This combo clears fog without streaks, fingerprints, or that greasy haze you get from wiping with your sleeve.
