Why Your AC Is Secretly a Defog Machine
According to Tom’s Automotive Service in Seattle, the smartest way to clear a foggy windshield isn’t wiping — it’s using your car’s own air conditioning system.
Even in winter, your AC is one of the most effective tools you have to fight fog and moisture.
Your air conditioner helps defog your windshield in two key ways:
- It dehumidifies the air inside the car.
An air conditioner doesn’t just cool — it also pulls moisture out of the air. In fact, early AC systems were invented as dehumidifiers first. Less moisture in the cabin = less fog on the glass. - It lowers the temperature right by the glass.
Cooler, drier air blowing over the windshield makes it harder for new condensation to form, so the fog disappears faster and stays away longer.
For ice and frost on the outside of the windshield, you still need a scraper or a de-icing product first. Once the heavy stuff is gone, your climate system can take over and keep the glass clear.
