When We Taught Children That Stopping Was Part of Growing

Those who lived through the naptime era still remember it. The weight of the blanket. The hush of the room. The safety of knowing nothing was required of you for a little while.

We didn’t know it then, but we were learning a truth that would take decades to rediscover: Rest is not the opposite of achievement. It is what makes achievement sustainable.

Science now confirms what kindergarten teachers already knew in their bones: children need margin. They need processing time. They need space to be before being asked to produce again.

Play, music, rest, and quiet aren’t extras. They’re foundations.
