What Is a Leaf Sheep?
The Leaf Sheep (scientific name: Costasiella kuroshimae) is a species of sea slug found in the waters surrounding Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
Unlike ordinary slugs, the Leaf Sheep is incredibly small, usually measuring less than half an inch (about 1 centimeter) in length. Despite its tiny size, it has become an internet sensation thanks to its unique appearance.
Its body is covered with small green appendages that resemble leaves, giving it the appearance of a miniature sheep grazing in a meadow. Combined with its large dark eyes and cartoon-like face, the result is almost too cute to believe.
The Creature That Can Use Sunlight
One of the most extraordinary facts about the Leaf Sheep is its unusual relationship with plants.
The creature feeds primarily on algae. During this process, it absorbs chloroplasts—the structures responsible for photosynthesis in plants.
Scientists believe the Leaf Sheep can temporarily store these chloroplasts and use them to generate energy from sunlight. This rare ability, known as kleptoplasty, allows it to benefit from photosynthesis in a way that few animals on Earth can.
In simple terms, the Leaf Sheep is one of the only animals that can partially “eat sunlight.”
