Despite their “snake-like” appearance, skinks are completely harmless to humans. They aren’t venomous, and they aren’t aggressive. In fact, they are the “gardeners” of the balcony, eating the spiders and insects we actually dislike.
A skink will only bite if it is seriously terrified or handled roughly. Their primary defense isn’t an attack; it’s a retreat.
The moment I realized it was a skink, the fear vanished. It was replaced by a crushing sense of pity. I wasn’t looking at a threat; I was looking at a life that was about to go out right in front of me.
I spent the next twenty minutes with a small spatula and a pair of tweezers, gently widening the crack and nudging the little warrior toward freedom.
