The prosecution described the poisoning as carefully planned. Eric Richins reportedly consumed a cocktail prepared by his wife before suddenly becoming violently ill and dying shortly afterward. Toxicology reports later revealed lethal amounts of fentanyl in his system.
But the accusations did not stop there.
Prosecutors also convinced jurors that Kouri Richins had attempted to kill her husband months earlier by poisoning a sandwich she prepared for him during a separate incident. That allegation led to an additional attempted murder conviction.
The case gained worldwide attention partly because of what happened after Eric Richins’ death.
Only months later, Kouri Richins published a children’s picture book titled Are You With Me?, which focused on helping children cope with grief and the loss of a parent.
At the time, she publicly spoke about the project in emotional interviews and claimed the book was created to comfort her own children after losing their father.
