The employee shook his head.
She pointed to the empty spot on the shelf.
“My husband used to love it.”
Suddenly the entire mood changed.
She explained that her husband had passed away three years earlier after more than fifty years of marriage.
Every Saturday morning, he would ask her to pick up his favorite treat while he stayed home making coffee.
Now, even though he was gone, she still came to the store every week.
Not because she needed the item.
But because it reminded her of him.
For a few seconds, nobody spoke.
