There are plenty of myths about the dangling chain. Some people think it’s there to improve traction or braking, or to help stabilize the truck. Others assume it’s an old-fashioned feature that no one really needs anymore.
None of that is true. The chain isn’t there for grip, braking, or balance – it’s there to manage static electricity, and it still matters even with modern electronic safety systems.
Because it looks so low-tech, people often underestimate its importance. But in safety engineering, simple and reliable often beats complex and fragile.
When the chain is missing, broken, or not making good contact with the ground, the risk of static buildup increases – especially when combined with poor grounding practices during loading and unloading.
