We had been the absolute picture of ordinary suburban peace. The tired, hardworking mother and her innocent child running Tuesday afternoon errands.

And then, the universe violently ruptured.

Toby had stopped humming. He froze, his small body going rigid in the cart. He reached out with a slightly sticky hand and urgently tugged on the sleeve of my navy blue medical scrubs.

“Mommy, look!” Toby whispered, his voice pitching loud in the quiet bread aisle. He pointed a tiny finger directly toward the glass bakery display case twenty feet away. “That is the lady who comes to our house when you are at work! That is the lady who plays in your bedroom!”

My heart detached completely from its moorings. It plummeted past my stomach, dropping into a bottomless, freezing void.

The ambient noise of the supermarket, including the rhythmic beeping of the registers, the soft pop music, and the squeak of cart wheels, evaporated instantly. It was replaced by a deafening, high pitched ringing. A cold sweat broke out across the nape of my neck. My mind spun wildly, frantically searching for a rational explanation.

Ten years of marriage to a man named Gregory. A peaceful, heavily mortgaged home in the suburbs of Nashville. A husband who kissed my forehead every single morning before driving to his corporate accounting firm. A man who complained about the rising cost of living and insisted we needed to save every penny for Toby’s college fund.
