Leaky Roof & Gutter Survival Guide: How to Find, Fix, and Prevent Costly Water Damage

8. Step Flashing Failures

Step flashing is used where a wall intersects the roof. Each short “step” overlaps a shingle and directs water down the roof.

Common failures:

  • Rust-through of older metal
  • Loose, slipped, or missing pieces

Once water gets behind a missing or rusted step, it runs straight into the wall/ceiling.

Fix: replace the damaged step flashing.

  1. Remove shingles in the affected area.
  2. Loosen siding as needed.
  3. Pull out the bad flashing and slide new pieces into place, overlapping properly.
  4. Reinstall shingles and siding.
