8. Step Flashing Failures
Step flashing is used where a wall intersects the roof. Each short “step” overlaps a shingle and directs water down the roof.
Common failures:
- Rust-through of older metal
- Loose, slipped, or missing pieces
Once water gets behind a missing or rusted step, it runs straight into the wall/ceiling.
Fix: replace the damaged step flashing.
- Remove shingles in the affected area.
- Loosen siding as needed.
- Pull out the bad flashing and slide new pieces into place, overlapping properly.
- Reinstall shingles and siding.
