4. Fixing Plumbing Vent Boots
Plumbing vent boots come in three main styles:
- All plastic
- Plastic base with metal top
- Two-piece all-metal
Check for:
- Cracked plastic bases
- Split seams on metal bases
- Rotted or torn rubber boot around the pipe
If any of these are damaged, replace the vent boot. If the boot itself is fine but nails at the base are loose or missing, swap them for rubber-washered roofing screws.
To replace a boot:
- Carefully lift and loosen shingles on both sides of the vent.
- Use a flat bar to break the sealant and pop nails.
- Slide the old boot out and install the new one over the pipe.
- Re-nail and reseal shingles.
