19. Gutters Overflowing? Upsize the Downspout

A long gutter (e.g., 50 ft) with a single 2×3-in. downspout will often overflow in heavy rain.

If you can’t add another downspout, upgrade to a 3×4-in. downspout in the same location.

  1. Remove the existing downspout and old drop outlet.
  2. Use the new 3×4 drop outlet as a template and trace the larger hole.
  3. Cut the hole with tin snips or a multi-tool with a metal blade.
  4. Install the new outlet and downspout with sheet-metal screws.
  5. Seal the outlet to the gutter with seam sealer.
