Leaky Roof & Gutter Survival Guide: How to Find, Fix, and Prevent Costly Water Damage

18. Sealing Leaky Gutter Seams

Every metal gutter connection is a potential leak point:

  • End caps
  • Splices
  • Drop outlets
  • Miters (inside/outside corners)

Use a gutter seam sealer formulated for standing water and UV exposure. Key property: it should be self-leveling and runny enough to penetrate deep into seams.

Steps:

  1. Scrape out as much old tar/caulk as possible.
  2. Make sure surfaces are clean and completely dry.
  3. Apply seam sealer generously along the joint.
  4. Keep the tube warm on cold days so it stays fluid.
