17. Downspout in the Way? Add a Hinge

If you’re constantly removing a downspout extension to mow or walk, add a hinge where the bottom elbow meets the horizontal run.

How:

  1. Cut the downspout at a 45° angle with tin snips or a metal-cutting blade.
  2. Install a two-piece downspout hinge (e.g., Zip Hinge) with sheet-metal screws.
  3. Now you can flip the extension up while mowing and drop it down when done.

Hinges usually come in white only; spray-paint if you want a color match.
