15. Repairing a Short Section with a Slip Joint

If only the last few feet of your seamless gutter are damaged (say, from a fallen branch), you don’t have to replace the whole run.

You can cut off the damaged section and install a new piece using a slip joint:

  • White and brown gutters: home centers sell matching gutters and slip joints.
  • Custom colors: make your own slip joint from a box miter.

Steps for custom slip joint:

  1. Buy a box miter in your gutter color.
  2. Cut a 3-in. section from it with tin snips — that’s your slip joint.
  3. Hang new gutter beside the old.
  4. Slide the slip joint over the seam to bridge and seal both pieces.
