12. Loose Gutters: Upgrade Your Hangers

Older gutters often hang on spikes and ferrules. Over time the spikes work loose, gutters sag, and water goes where it shouldn’t.

Pounding spikes back in is temporary at best.

Better fix: add fascia hanger brackets.

  1. Hook the bracket under the front lip of the gutter.
  2. Screw the back of the bracket into the fascia.

Leave the old spikes in place — a spike head looks better than a visible hole.

If shingles overhang or you have steel roofing, use hangers with screws built in so you can drive them in under the overhang more easily.
