A few days later, we arrived at their cozy home. The porch was lined with garden decorations that Maisie adored instantly. Inside, it smelled like roasted chicken and cinnamon.

Then a young woman stepped out of the kitchen carrying a tray of rolls. “This is our granddaughter, Josie,” Ernest said proudly.

She smiled warmly. “I’ve heard a lot about you.”
