When the Messages Stopped
I watched her read each text in silence.
Her leg started shaking.
The glow of the screen drained the color from her face.
“Card declined.”
“Security is asking for ID.”
“Police are here.”
Then the final message:
“He knows everything. Something is happening.”
And then — nothing.
No more messages.
No more lies.
I opened my eyes.
“Is something wrong?” I asked.
She looked like she’d seen a ghost.
