The Surprise Dinner He Didn’t See Coming
The next day, I made phone calls.
Quietly. Methodically.
Not out of spite.
Out of strategy.
That evening, the triplets were fed, changed, and asleep.
My sister agreed to watch them the second I told her what was happening.
Sam got dressed in a nice button-down I hadn’t seen in months.
He was upbeat.
Smug.
I handed him a folded cloth.
He laughed. “What’s this?”
“A blindfold,” I said. “I planned a surprise.”
He smirked, flattered by the attention.
“Wow. Okay. Getting fancy now?”
I secured the blindfold over his eyes and drove.
He chatted the whole way, completely oblivious.
When we arrived, I guided him up a walkway and toward a door.
I could hear voices inside.
Sam tensed. “Wait. Where are we?”
I untied the blindfold.
He blinked.
We were standing in his sister’s living room.
His parents.
My parents.
Extended family.
Close friends.
All seated.
Waiting.
Sam’s smile collapsed.
