How Much Does It Cost to Winterize Windows?
The most common DIY method uses clear heat-shrink plastic window kits. They’re inexpensive and easy to install:
- Typical cost per window: about $1.50 to $3.00 for an average 3 ft x 5 ft window
- What affects cost: window size, number of windows, and which brand/kit you choose
In most homes, the energy savings over a single winter easily cover the cost of the kits—and often much more. But the biggest benefit might be comfort: blocking drafts makes rooms feel significantly warmer without touching the thermostat.
Additional optional costs if you want a more complete winterization:
- Fresh exterior caulk around window frames
- New or upgraded weatherstripping on the sashes
- Possibly heavier curtains, cellular shades, or thermal drapes to reduce heat loss at night
Step 1: Inspect and Seal Before Using a Window Kit
Before you touch the plastic film, make sure the window itself isn’t leaking around the frame:
- Check exterior caulk: Walk outside and inspect the caulk around the window frame. Look for gaps, cracks, or missing sections.
- If you find issues, scrape out loose caulk and apply fresh exterior-grade caulk.
- Check weatherstripping: Open and close the window and look at the weatherstripping on the moving sashes.
- Replace weatherstripping that’s torn, flattened, brittle, or missing.
If the frame and sashes are leaking badly, no film kit will fully solve the problem by itself—sealing those leaks first makes the plastic much more effective.
