Michael spoke as if nothing were unusual. “This is Sofia,” he said smoothly, “and soon, we will welcome a child.” His words fell like stones into the silence. My family shifted uncomfortably, glancing at me. He believed he had humiliated me beyond repair. What he did not know was that I was ready.
The Envelope of Truth
I reached beneath my napkin and placed an envelope on the table. “Open it,” I told him calmly. His smirk widened—until it didn’t. The color drained from his face as he read the papers. My voice carried across the table: “These are medical results, Michael. They prove what you’ve kept hidden. You cannot father a child.”
The Shock That Followed
Gasps echoed. My mother covered her mouth. My cousins leaned forward in disbelief. Sofia’s glow vanished as she stared at Michael, her eyes wide. “You told me this was yours,” she whispered, her voice shaking. Doubt settled heavily between them. She rose abruptly, her chair scraping against the stone. “I can’t do this,” she murmured, before rushing out into the night.
