China is reportedly undergoing significant changes in its military leadership following serious allegations against a top general. This development has sparked fears of escalating tensions amid an already precarious global landscape.
The general in question, 75-year-old Zhang Youxia, was a senior figure considered one of President Xi Jinping’s closest military allies. Accusations against him include leaking ‘core technical data’ about China’s nuclear weapons program to the US, as well as engaging in bribery.
While economic trade between the US and China thrives, military relations remain fraught with tension. Both nations often flaunt their military capabilities to discourage potential aggression from the other. This latest scandal, involving sensitive nuclear information, threatens to heighten these military tensions.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Zhang Youxia is being investigated for severe violations of party discipline and state laws. The charges against him include forming political cliques and abusing his authority within the Central Military Commission, the top decision-making body of the Communist Party’s military.
