PART 1 — THE FIRST STEP WAS HIS
Gideon had spent so many years being told where to stand, where to walk, and when to stop that the rescue team knew getting him out would be more complicated than cutting a chain. The legal order was finally in place, the old restraints had been removed, and a transport trailer waited with its doors open. But freedom was a strange thing for an animal who had never been allowed much of it. When Gideon reached for Evelyn’s hand with the tip of his trunk and quietly held it, she understood that he wasn’t asking to be pulled anywhere. He was testing her. He was deciding whether this human would be different from the others. She kept her hand still. Gideon eventually released it, turned toward the trailer, and took one slow step forward. Then he stopped.
PART 2 — NOBODY WAS GOING TO PUSH HIM
The transport crew had expected hesitation, but Gideon’s hesitation was deeper than fear.
