A Stray Drone Incident Just Triggered a Major Political Crisis in Latvia

One drone crashed in eastern Latvia, another reportedly struck an empty oil storage facility near the town of Rezekne, while a third briefly entered Latvian airspace before leaving again. Although no injuries or deaths were reported, the situation triggered major concerns about national security and emergency preparedness.

Residents in the affected region criticized authorities for what they described as a slow and confusing response. Several locals claimed the national emergency alert system was not activated until nearly an hour after one of the drones crashed, fueling accusations that the government had failed to react quickly enough during a potentially dangerous situation.

Facing mounting criticism, Evika Silina publicly admitted that “something went wrong” and declared that Latvia could not allow such incidents to continue happening without consequences.
