The New York office reportedly occupied an entire floor above a ramen restaurant in Chinatown before it was shut down in late 2022 following the FBI investigation.
Lu now faces a possible prison sentence of up to 30 years. Meanwhile, his co-defendant Chen Jinping previously pleaded guilty to conspiring to act as an agent of the Chinese government and is still awaiting sentencing.
The conviction comes during an already tense week involving U.S.-China relations, after another high-profile case in California led to the resignation of a local mayor accused of acting as an illegal agent for China.
