Donald Trump has announced that citizens from 19 countries will have their US immigration applications frozen – with the White House openly preparing to expand the list even further.
Donald Trump has continued his aggressive clampdown on immigration since returning to the White House for his second term, but the policy has escalated sharply in the wake of last week’s shooting in Washington, D.C.
The attack took place just a few blocks from the Capitol and resulted in one National Guard member being killed and another left in critical condition in hospital.
The alleged gunman is believed to be 29-year-old Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, who reportedly entered the US legally in 2021 under Joe Biden’s administration. He has pleaded not guilty to murder and assault charges.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting – which many critics have described as a likely terror-related incident – US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that it was halting immigration requests from people wishing to come to America from Afghanistan, “effective immediately”.
