17 Winter Survival Hacks to Get You Through the Season

Winter doesn’t have to be miserable. With a bit of preparation, you can stay safer, warmer and way less stressed — whether you’re at home, in the car or just trying to keep the house from turning into a slushy mess. Here are 17 simple winter survival hacks that actually help.

  1. Add Weight for Better Winter Traction
If your rear-wheel-drive car struggles on snow and ice (poor grip on hills, fishtailing in curves), it probably needs more weight over the drive wheels.
Place a few water softener salt bags or similar heavy bags in the trunk. This extra weight helps the rear tires bite into snow and ice.

  2. Quiet & Protect Your Wiper Blades with Silicone Spray
Winter road grime makes wipers squeal and chatter. To keep them gliding smoothly:
    • Clean the blades with mild soap and water.
    • Dry them, then spray the moving joints and rubber with silicone lubricant.
    • Wipe off any excess.
Reapply a few times over winter and add it to your regular winterizing checklist.
