Donald Trump has indicated he is open to changing US cannabis laws, just as scientists are warning about a disturbing side effect now being linked to long-term use.

Right now, the US has a patchwork of rules around cannabis. Federal law still classifies it as a Schedule I substance, but many states have carved out their own exemptions for medical and even recreational use.

Cannabis can be prescribed for several medical purposes, including:

  • Chronic pain relief (often viewed as less risky than opioids)
  • Managing symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis
  • Helping with nausea and appetite loss from chemotherapy

But while medical use is increasingly accepted in many states, recreational use depends heavily on where you live — and is still illegal at the federal level.
