At just 16 years old, LeeRay King from near Wellington, New Zealand, found himself fighting for his life — and the evidence of what nearly killed him now fits inside a small plastic packet.
What’s inside that packet? A piece of his own lung — blackened, shriveled, and surgically removed after collapsing multiple times.
LeeRay started vaping at 14. Like many teenagers, it began with peer pressure and disposable vapes that seemed harmless — even “safer” than cigarettes.
“I got kind of peer pressured into vaping,” he said. “I didn’t like it at first but then got hooked on it within the first week.”
Within months, he was “heavily vaping,” going through around four disposable vapes a week and inhaling vapor “all day, every day.”
