Republican Senator With Daughter Who Has Down Syndrome Condemns Trump Over Offensive ‘R-word’ Remark

A Republican state legislator is publicly breaking with the president after Donald Trump used a slur often directed at people with intellectual disabilities.

Over Thanksgiving weekend, Trump launched an attack on Minnesota Governor Tim Walz — Kamala Harris’ 2024 running mate — accusing him of letting refugees from Somalia “take over” parts of the state.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed that “Somalian gangs are roving the streets looking for ‘prey’ as our wonderful people stay locked in their apartments and houses hoping against hope that they will be left alone,” and went on to describe Walz using the “R-word” — a term widely recognized as outdated, offensive, and hurtful to people with disabilities and their families.

The backlash was swift, and it didn’t just come from Democrats. One Republican, Indiana state legislator Michael Bohacek, decided he’d had enough.
