Freddie was born in Vienna, but when the Nazis arrived in 1938, his life broke into pieces. His parents sent him away to stay safe, and he eventually ended up in Paris. Many people would have stayed indoors, but Freddie did something incredibly brave and strange. He got fake papers and pretended to be a Frenchman named Robert Metzner.
To stay safe and hide in plain sight, he actually became a guide for the German soldiers. He would meet them on the streets and lead them to the city’s bars and brothels. By helping the soldiers find nightlife and girls, he made them trust him. They never suspected that the young man laughing with them was actually Jewish and was using them to stay alive.
He was hiding in the brightest lights of Paris, living on the edge of a knife every single night. One wrong word would have meant his death.
