The moment everything fell apart
Then, suddenly – BANG.
The police had arrived. I watched on my laptop as he froze, then bolted toward the back door.
Officers burst in, guns drawn, shouting commands. Seconds later, they tackled him in my backyard.

Relief hit me first. Then dread.
Because as they pulled off his mask on the screen, my heart stopped.
I knew that face.
It was my son.

The same son I hadn’t seen, or heard from, in twenty years.
I ran out of the café, crossed the street in a daze, and reached the backyard as officers held him down.
“Why, Trevor?” I managed. “Why would you do this?”
He laughed. A bitter, ugly sound I didn’t recognize.
“Why do you think?” he spat. “You cut me off. You left me with nothing. You’re sitting on this house, this money, all alone.”
My legs nearly gave out. I gripped the patio table to stay standing.
“So you wanted to drive me insane?” I asked. “Make me think I was losing my mind?”
“YES!” he yelled. “If I got you declared mentally unstable, I’d become your guardian. I could sell the house, access your accounts…”
I couldn’t listen anymore.
