17 Winter Survival Hacks to Get You Through the Season

  1. Saltwater Trick for Thin Ice on Your Windshield
    No scraper and running late?
    • Mix a little road salt + water in a container.
    • Pour over a thin layer of ice when temps are just below freezing.
    • Use wipers to clear the resulting slush.
    Important: Salt isn’t great for your car’s finish — use this sparingly and only in a pinch.
  2. Build a Simple Mitten & Shoe Dryer
    For faster drying over a warm air vent:
    • Drill pairs of 1/8-inch holes in a scrap 2×4.
    • Insert U-shaped pieces of galvanized 14-gauge wire to act as “posts.”
    • Drill 1-inch holes between the pairs if you want warm air from a floor register to flow up.
    Set the rack on a register and slide shoes, mittens or small boots over the wire to dry.
