17 Winter Survival Hacks to Get You Through the Season

  1. Snowblow Smarter, Not Harder
    To clear a driveway efficiently:
    • Start in the middle of the driveway.
    • Blow snow toward one side on the first pass.
    • Make a U-turn and come back down the other side, blowing the opposite way.
This pattern reduces how often you adjust the chute and usually eliminates the need for a second full pass.
  2. Spray Rain-X Inside Your Snowblower Chute
Wet, heavy snow loves to clog the chute. Before the season starts:
    • Spray the inside of the chute with Rain-X or another water-repelling product.
    • Let it dry so the surface becomes slick.
Snow slides out instead of packing in. Reapply every few snowfalls to keep it working.

  1. Stop Slipping on Ladders with a Carpet Scrap
When using a ladder in winter:
    • Place a piece of carpet at the base.
    • Wipe your shoes before climbing.
This removes snow, mud and moisture from your soles so you’re less likely to slip on higher rungs.
  2. Erase White Salt Stains from Shoes
De-icing salt keeps sidewalks safe but destroys shoes with white streaks. Fix it fast:
    • Mix water + a couple tablespoons of white vinegar in a spray bottle.
    • Spray onto a clean paper towel or cloth.
    • Gently wipe the stained areas and watch the salt marks disappear.
Keep the bottle near your door so you can clean boots as soon as you get home.
