Got one room that always feels like a walk-in fridge? A bedroom, office or basement that never gets as warm as the rest of the house?
Most people just drop a plug-in space heater in the corner and call it a day. Problem: they’re ugly, expensive to run, can overload circuits, and are a burn risk with kids or pets.
Here’s a smarter approach: fix the reasons the room is cold, then add safe, built-in or low-profile heat where needed.
First: Fix the Obvious Airflow Problems (Cheap Wins)
1. Check for Closed or Blocked Registers

Before you blame the furnace, check the basics:
- Make sure all supply vents in that room are fully open.
- Move furniture, rugs, boxes or curtains that are sitting in front of vents.
- Don’t forget return vents – if they’re blocked, air can’t circulate properly.
You’d be surprised how often a “cold room” is just a couch sitting over a register.
2. Make Sure Dampers Are Set for Winter

If you have duct dampers on the main trunks:
- Look for small metal levers on the big round or rectangular ducts near the furnace.
- Many systems are set differently for summer (more air upstairs) vs winter (more air downstairs).
- Turn the lever so it’s in line with the duct to open, across the duct to close or restrict.
Small adjustments can push more warm air into the problem room without touching the thermostat.
